Train to Teach 2024-25

Our Primary PGCE SEND course runs from September to July, and during this time you will train in two schools (one mainstream and one special school), developing your professional skills, knowledge and understanding in motivating, supportive and inspiring settings. You will also spend time studying with the University of Birmingham, leading to the award of Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status.

The Chadsgrove Primary PGCE SEND programme enables you to train in the classroom, working alongside good and outstanding teachers within each school setting. You will be mentored by experienced and enthusiastic practitioners who will provide the highest quality support whilst challenging you to become a confident and truly effective classroom teacher.

What we are looking for
We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about teaching pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and who are committed to providing outstanding teaching. Applicants should ideally be able to provide evidence of experience with children with SEND. We can assist applicants who wish to gain school based experience, but this is not essential for application, please contact us for advice.

How we select
Selection is a rigorous and thorough process designed to identify the applicants with the strongest aptitude. Chadsgrove, as the lead school in the partnership, coordinates the recruitment process in close liaison with the University of Birmingham and our partner schools. This involves a class-based activity (which will be sent to you prior to interview), some short written tests for English and Maths, and interviews with the School Council and formal interview panel.

Course Entry Requirements

Applicants need to hold GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English, Mathematics and a science subject, and (or expect to achieve prior to commencing the course) a 2:2 degree or above.

Before acceptance on the course, students will also need to:

  • provide a satisfactory medical form
  • complete an enhanced DBS/police check
  • complete a Declaration of Suitability to Teach
  • adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practise
